Matt Forde becomes a royal jester
Matt Forde got a laugh out of the King tonight, making a joke on his name.
The comic was performing at the Royal Variety Show, when he adopted an impression of Donald Trump scaremongering about migrants: ‘They’re eating the cats, they’re eating the dogs!’
He then addressed the King from the stage, saying in Trump’s voice: ‘Your Majesty King Charles, you’re named after a Spaniel – be very careful, they’ll eat you alive.’
The King was seen laughing in the royal box.
He had been due to attend with Camilla, but the Queen stayed home to recover from a chest infection.
Buckingham Palace said: 'Following a recent chest infection, The Queen continues to experience some lingering post-viral symptoms, as a result of which doctors have advised that, after a busy week of engagements, Her Majesty should prioritise sufficient rest. With great regret, she has therefore withdrawn from attendance at tonight's Royal Variety Performance.’
Comedians Ellie Taylor, , Scott Bennett and Larry Dean were also on the bill at the Royal Albert Hall – alongside Alan Carr, who co-hosted with Amanda Holden
The line-up also includes Elton John introducing his new West End show The Devil Wears Prada, magicians Penn and Teller, and Lorraine Kelly with the Change And Check Choir, performing Love Is All Around to raise awareness for breast cancer detection.
Mischief Theatre, the team behind Play That Goes Wrong will be giving the first public performance of their follow-up show The Comedy About Spies, which hits the West End next year.
Set in 1960s London, the show is described as a ‘farcical, physical double-crossing caper full of misunderstanding, miscommunication, and mistaken identity’.
When a rogue British agent steals plans for a top-secret new weapon, spies from the CIA and the KGB assemble at a London hotel to track down the British mole and obtain the file.
When a young British couple and an older actor auditioning for the title role in the first James Bond film check into the hotel, the stakes reach boiling point…
Written by original Mischief company members Henry Lewis and Henry Shields, the show opens for previews at the Noël Coward Theatre on April 14, with May 6 the official opening night.
The Royal Variety Performance will air on ITV1 at a later date.
