Rob-bing shoulders with the PM
Rob Beckett goes to Downing Street
Rob Beckett attended a St. George’s Day reception at Downing Street yesterday.
The comic rubbed shoulders with Keir Starmer and celebrities including Gary Lineker at the No10 bash.
The Prime Minister posted a picture of the three of them on Facebook with the caption: ‘England is a beautiful country, rich with pride, potential and creativity. Today, let’s remember our shared history, our shared inheritance and our shared values. Happy St. George’s Day.’
And at the event he said he wants to reclaim the St George flag from far-right extremists, adding he wanted to ‘wrench it out of the hands of those who want to divide this nation and reclaim it for good.’
Before the reception, Downing Street said the event was ‘to celebrate the very best of our nation’s music, culture and sport’ and pointing out that Sir Kier ‘is the first prime minister to personally host a St George’s Day reception’.
The guest list included paralympian Dame Sarah Storey, former EastEnders actor Ross Kemp, and England’s rugby union captain Maro Itoje.
However, technically April 23 is not St. George’s Day this year – as saints’ feast days cannot take place within a week of Easter. It means this year St George’s Day has been moved to next Monday, April 28, according to the Church of England.
