Comedian sets up a stand-up competition only he can enter

comedy

New act competitions are a rite of passage for everyone trying to break into the world of stand-up – which inevitably leads to disappointment for most of the hundreds, if not thousands, of people hoping to break into the business each year.

Well, one comic has come up with a solution: launching a ‘competition’ which only he is allowed to enter. Carl Carzana literally cannot lose the Carl Carzana of the Year Comedy Competition

He will take his crown at what probably won’t be a nail-biting final in Brighton next month, although the will be supported by a line-up of fellow comics.

Carzana – whose own competition peak came when he was crowned runner-up at the 2018 Bath New Comedian of the Year contest – said:’ Like many comics, I have been successful in some comedy competitions and less so in others.

‘Undoubtedly, the comedy competition circuit is a valuable experience for any new comic and can be a great way into the industry for those who consistently do well in them…

‘However, competitions can leave comics questioning whether their authentic style and tone of voice will work. This can lead many comedians to change their act hoping for competition success.

‘I want to show new acts that the comedy industry can be whatever you want it to be, and that there should be no barriers to being creative. If you have an idea that’s funny and inventive, run with it and see what happens.’

The grand final of the Carl Carzana of the Year Comedy Competition takes place on October 18 at the Actors Theatre in Kemptown, Brighton. Proceeds will go to Creative Future, a local charity that helps artists from underrepresented a communities. Tickets are available here.
