How Bob Newhart's wife kept him grounded

Comic was married to Ginnie for 60 years

comedyThe Times Diary column today recounts a lovely story about how Bob Newhart’s wife Ginnie kept his feet  on the ground.

The comic, who died this week at 94, was a master of self-deprecation and would recall how his spouse ‘never let me get too full of myself.’

One night, at the peak of his success, Ginnie asked him to take out the rubbish and he moaned: ‘Do you think Joanne Woodward asks Paul Newman to recycle the cans and plastic?’

His wife replied: ‘If you were Paul Newman I wouldn’t ask you to.’

Bob and Ginnie married in January 1963 and remained wed until Ginnie died at the age of 82 in April last year.
