Stan Laurel's trademark hat sold for £12,800

comedyOne of Stan Laurel's trademark bowler hats has sold for £12,800 at auction.

The comedy star gave it to stage doorman Harry Brown on their 1947 UK theatre tour and signed it: ‘Thanks Harry!’

It sold at London-based auctioneer Bonhams, where specialist Claire Tole-Moir said: ‘His bowler hat was his signa- ture look it is hard to picture him without it.’

In the late 1950s, the hat was displayed at the Odeon Leicester Square, and was subsequently sold at Christie's in 1989 for £8,500. It has  a certificate of authenticity from the Museum of Entertainment in Truro.

Ulverston-born Laurel starred in 107 films with Oliver Hardy. He died aged 74 in 1965, eight years after his partner.
