Joe Lycett mentioned in the Commons
Joe Lycett’s money-shredding stunt was mentioned in Prime Minister’s Questions yesterday – but Keir Starmer got almost all the facts wrong.
The Labour leader said the comedian had destroyed £10,000 of his own money – although Lycett had already admitted it was fake – and done so as a protest against a Qatari energy giant.
In fact, the stunt was designed to highlight how David Beckham had shredded his reputation as an LGBTQI+ ally over his reported £10million-a-year deal to help Qatar sportswash its abysmal human rights record.
Sir Keir told the Commons: ‘You may have seen this week that somebody shredded £10,000 in protest at those propping up an oil and gas giant.
‘But he [Prime Minister Rishi Sunak] shreds £10,000 every other minute propping them up. Which does he think is the more absurd?’
Lycett posted a clip of the comment on Twitter, with the caption: ‘Not quite what happened but fair play.’
