'Old men want to hook up with Mrs Brown'

So says creator Brendan O'Carroll

comedyIt probably won’t do much for the reputation of Mrs Brown’s Boys fans – but Brendan O’Carroll says older men often turn up at the stage door wanting a date with his alter-ego.

‘We have had them at the stage door from all over the world,’ he told The Sun. ‘I don’t want to embarrass anybody so I just get the theatre staff to say, "Thank you very much but Mrs Brown doesn’t do that. She doesn’t go for a drink, but I’m happy to pass the flowers on. Thank you very much, but let’s just leave it at that".’

The comic also hit back at his detractors, saying: ‘I honestly just ignore the critics. There will always be a donkey telling the racehorse how he should run the race.

‘But to say that criticism is water off a duck’s back would be a lie. When you’re doing your best at something and somebody tells you that you’re shit, that is really disappointing.’

And he also responded to accusations of racism when he appeared on The One Show earlier this year, by mentioning some famous black people who had seen the clip.

Interviewed alongside Tyler Perry, O’Carroll was asked on the BBC show if the US comic could be on Mrs Brown’s Boys, he replied: ‘He’s very expensive, and so far we haven’t had anyone of his colour in there.’

Speaking to The Sun he told how Tyler had showed the clip to Beyoncé, who thought it was ‘hilarious’, adding: ‘I thought it was pretty cool that all his friends saw it, Oprah, Chris Rock, Obama.’
