Liverpudlian stand-up Stevie Faye dies at 95

Comic was a star of ITV's The Comedians

Liverpudlian stand-up Stevie Faye – who appeared in more than a dozen episodes of 1970s stand-up showcase The Comedians – has died at the age of 95.

He prided himself on never telling a dirty joke, and when he retired in 1997, told the Liverpool Echo: ‘I have gone down well in places like Glasgow and prisons; it just shows you don't have to use that sort of material.’

Faye grew up in the Dingle area of Liverpool and was an amateur boxer, kitchen porter and candlemaker before turning to comedy.

He appeared on 12 episodes of ITV's The Comedians  between 1971 and 1974  alongside the likes of Bernard Manning, Frank Carson and Mike Reid – and then in three episodes in its 1985 revival.

Faye also acted in the groundbreaking BBC series Boys from the Blackstuff, playing a barman.

The Echo reports his death today, saying he leaves two children, four grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a great-great granddaughter.
