Al Murray writes his first straight history book
Al Murray has written a serious book about the Second World War.
The comedian has a history degree from Oxford University and has maintained a keen interest in the subject, hosting shows such as Sky’s Why Do The Brits Win Every War? and the podcast We Have Ways of Making You Talk.
He has written several comedy books, some in the voice oi his Pub Landlord alter-ego, as well as the 2013 memoir Watching War Films With My Dad. But Command: How The Allies Learned To Win The Second World War will be his first history volume.
He told trade website The Bookseller: ‘Why am I so interested? Because, as we've very clearly seen in recent times, crisis reveals character in every way imaginable and the Second World War offers the historian the biggest crisis in human history.
‘With Command I will try to tell the story of how the war progressed from the British and American perspective, using some of the leading Allied combat commanders - and several that are less prominent - to tell the story of how the West got its act together in its efforts to defeat Nazi Germany, and what that tells us about the characters and the challenges that faced them.’
Murray’s previous book, published last autumn, was The Last 100 Years (give or take) and All That: An hilarious gallop through 20th Century Britain
The book will be published by Headline on October 13.
