Comedy club chain to open its first Scottish venue

The Glee comedy club is to open a new branch in Glasgow.

To launch on February 1, the new venture will be the city’s largest comedy club, with 100 seats more than the 300-capacity Rotunda. Capacity can be doubled for all-standing gigs.

It will occupy the site on Renfrew Street, next to Cineworld cinema, previously occupied by the Highlight and Jongleurs chains. 

The Glee currently has purpose-built venues in Birmingham, Cardiff and Nottingham and also runs a weekly gig in Oxford.

Club founder Mark Tughan said: ’Scotland has given us some of the world’s funniest comedians over the years, as well as having some of the best comedy festivals and a great culture of coming together to enjoy live entertainment. 

‘As a lifelong fan of Scotland’s comedy scene, opening our first Scottish Glee Club is extremely exciting for me and the rest of the team. 

‘Glasgow is such a vibrant cultural city and there is a huge amount of fresh comedy talent coming through on the scene here, so the anticipation is really building as we countdown to opening in 2019.’

The opening weekend bill comprises Gary Little, Jay Lafferty and Geoff Norcott while it will also host touring stand-up and music shows, like its sister venues.

The Glee first opened in Birmingham in 1994,  and the company was recently embroiled with a trademark fight with 20th Century Fox for using the word Glee for itsTV show. The two sides reached a secret out-of-court settlement last year.
