From Benidorm to Scarborough
The BBC has confirmed the new series from Benidorm creator Derren Litten, called Scarborough.
Like his ITV hit, the show is an ensemble comedy set in a resort – although the weather is likely to be very different.
Six half-hour episodes have been commissioned for BBC One and will be filmed in North Yorkshire in the summer of next year.
BBC comedy controller Shane Allen said; ‘It’s a real coup to have someone of Derren’s great experience land a broad sitcom with a Northern comedy heart to it, it’ll do Scarborough very proud.’
The action revolves around a local karaoke bar where there residents gather to swap gossip and sing 1980s classics.
Last month, Litten announced that Benidorm was coming to an end after more than a decade on air, tweeting: 'Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened!’ He added that the next instalment of the sitcom's story would be told in the stage play, which begins a UK tour in Newcastle in September.
At its peak, Benidorm was one of ITV's biggest hits, attracting more than 8 million viewers. But series 10 ten ended in May with 4.1 million.
Gregor Sharp is the BBC's commissioning editor for Scarborough, with Chris Sussman and Stephen McCrum both executive producers for BBC Studios.
