BBC snaps up Ronnie Cheng
BBC Three has snapped up the rights to air Australian comedy series Ronny Chieng: International Student.
The seven half-hour episodes star Daily Show comedian Chieng, and are based on his experiences as an international university student living and studying in Australia.
It premiered on the ABC in Australia in June, following an earlier pilot, and will also air on Comedy Central in the US.
The title character, also called Ronny Chieng, is a student from Malaysia who arrives in Melbourne to study law. Ronny is smart, driven and competitive, although his blunt manner puts him at odds with most of the people on campus
Molly Daniels co-stars as an optimistic fellow student, Anthony Morgan is the ‘quietly insane’ lecturer Professor Dale and Patch May is a brash American student.
BBC Three controller Damian Kavanagh said: ‘Ronny Chieng is a welcome new addition to BBC Three. He's a comedy genius and, in Ronny Chieng: International Student, he has the perfect vehicle for his talents. I couldn't be more excited to bring this series to the UK.’
And Sue Deeks, the BBC’s head of programme acquisition added: ‘This series is laugh-out-loud funny and Ronny Chieng is such an exciting comedy talent - we are so looking forward to introducing the show to BBC Three viewers.’
Chieng co-wrote the show with Declan Fay, and it is directed by Jonathan Brough. It will be available on BBC Three later this year.
