Jason Manford joins the Proms

Comic to sing at Glasgow event

Jason Manford is to perform in this year’s Proms in the Park event at Glasgow Green.

The announcement follows the news that the comedian is set to release an album of songs from West End musicals, A Different Stage, in October.

Manford will be sharing the stage with Scottish folk singer   Karen Matheson, jazz singer and Radio 2 presenter Clare Teal and Irish soprano Ailish Tynan with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

He said: ‘It is a huge honour to be asked to be part of the BBC Proms.’

The Glasgow event takes place on Saturday September 9 and will be broadcast live on TV and radio, hosted by BBC Radio Scotland presenter Jamie MacDougall.

He is not the first comedian to sing at the event: Greg McHugh's alter-ego Gary: Tank Commander took part last year.

Earlier this month Chortle revealed how Marcus Brigstocke was also taking part in the main Proms concerts in London’s Royal Albert Hall.

He will be singing  the role of Persian travelling salesman Ali Hakim in a 'semi-staged' production of  Oklahoma! on August 11.
