Two series of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel ordered

Amazon has ordered a new comedy series based around a fictional female stand-up pioneer.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as been created by Amy Sherman-Palladino, who was previously behind Gilmore Girls.

It stars Rachel Brosnahan as Miriam ‘Midge’ Maisel, a 1958 New York City woman who has everything she’s ever wanted—the perfect husband, two kids, and an elegant Upper West Side apartment. But her perfect life suddenly takes an unexpected turn when Midge discovers a talent for stand-up comedy – which takes her through the seedy nightclubs of Greenwich Village and ultimately a spot on Johnny Carson’s couch.

Amazon has ordered two series for its Prime subscribers – the first time it has ever ordered multiple seasons in advance – following the success of a pilot released last month which  garnered an average customer rating of 4.8, out of 5 stars.

‘In her onstage debut, Mrs. Maisel killed and had audiences responding overwhelmingly with digital applause,’ said Amazon Studios executive Joe Lewis.

‘Like any great young stand-up, we’re excited to see what she has to say next and for a long time to come. That made it an easy decision to order two seasons from Amy and her incredible cast. We can’t wait to bring it to customers soon.’

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel – which will be available worldwide, including the UK – is written and directed by Sherman-Palladino and has Family Guy’s  Daniel Palladino as executive producer.

It also stars Family Guy’s Alex Borstein, Michael Zegen as Midge’s husband Joel and Monk star Tony Shalhoub as Midge’s father Abe.
