Simon Bird to direct his first film
Simon Bird is set to direct his first feature film.
The Inbetweeners and Friday Night Dinner star will start shooting an adaptation of Joff Winterhart’s graphic novel Days of the Bagnold Summer in the next few months.
Bird’s wife Lisa Owens, who wrote the acclaimed novel Not Working, is working on the screenplay, Hollywood website Deadline reports.
The book tells of a lazy summer in the lives of a shy 15-year-old and his mother, and won acclaim for the way it captured the ennui, tension and pathos of a mother-son relationship.
Bird – a former Chortle Student Comedy Award finalist – previously directed the short Ernestine And Kit in 2015. It was nominated for best short film at last year’s Irish Film and Television Awards
Days of the Bagnold Summer is being produced by Matthew James Wilkinson, of Stigma Films, whose previous credits Kaleidoscope starring Toby Jones and Inseparable with Benedict Cumberbatch.
Casting has yet to be announced.
