Back of the Q
The second volume of Spike Milligan’s groundbreaking Q series is to be released for the first time later this month.
The new release contains all 12 episode from series four and five of the show – confusingly titled Q8 and Q9 – that were first seen 1979.
It follows the release of seasons 1-3 last year; although only three of the seven episodes from the series one remain as the tapes were wiped after they were broadcast in 1969.
Monty Python acknowledged the influence of Milligan’s work on their own series, which began just a few months later. Michael Palin once said: ‘Terry Jones and I adored the Q... shows. [Milligan] was the first writer to play with the conventions of television.'
But despite its place in comedy history, the full series of Q had not even been released on VHS before, partly due to some racist and sexist jokes that have not aged well and partly because of the inconsistent quality of the writing.
The new volume is being released on DVD on February 27, with an rrp of £19.99. Order here.
