A splitting headache
The comedy week ahead.
Sunday October 9
LIVE IN GLASGOW: Frankie Boyle headlines a fundraiser for Stand comedy club owner and SNP MP Tommy Sheppard’s campaign to become deputy leader of his party. Pop Idol winner Michelle McManus is on the bill, too.
LIVE IN LEICESTER: Paul Sinha tops the bill at the BBC Asian Network’s Big Comedy Night the Curve theatre which also features Eshaan Akbar, Tommy Sandh, Hardeep Singh Kohli and the non-Asian Dane Baptiste.
Tuesday October 11
TV: There’s lots of anticipation for Divorce, the new comedy from the brutally honest mind of Sharon Horgan and marking Sarah Jessica Parker’s return to HBO, which comes to Sky Atlantic a couple of days after its American debut. Parker plays Frances who, after a disastrous evening at a friend’s 50th birthday party reassesses her marriage to Robert (Thomas Haden Church). But the break she craves is unlikely to be clean. 10.10pm
LIVE IN LONDON: Richard Gadd performs his Edinburgh Comedy Award-winning Monkey See Monkey Do in the very swanky surrounds of Brasserie Zedel, just off Piccadilly Circus tonight and tomorrow.
Wednesday October 12
TV: Romesh Ranganathan is travelling the world again, for a second series of Asian Provocateur. Following his trip to see his Sri Lankan family last time around, this season he is meeting relatives who emigrated to North America. And mum Shanthi is coming too. Episode one, set in Tampa, Florida, is available via BBC Three on the iPlayer from today.
RADIO: Canadian stand-up Mae Martin presents her debut series for Radio 4, looking at how millennials are changing the way that society thinks about sexuality and gender. Episode one of Mae Martin's Guide To 21st Century Sexuality looks at sex education. 11.15pm
LIVE IN HARROGATE: Martin is also on at the Harrogate Theatre tonight, supporting Adam Hess in his intense, and intensely funny, show Feathers. But denizens of the North Yorkshire town face a big dilemma, as off-the-wall Dutch satirist-clown Hans Teeuwen kicks off the non-London leg of his UK tour in the same venue. Decisions, decisions.
LIVE IN CARDIFF: Elis James in Wales surely can’t go wrong. He’s at the Glee Club tonight (and at the Swansea Grand tomorrow) with John Robins as they take their podcast and Radio X double-act on the road. Expect in-jokes, catchphrases and extracts from John’s deliberately badly-written autobiography, A Robins Amongst the Pigeons.
Thursday October 13
TV: James Buckley stars in Zapped, a new fantasy comedy for Dave. Read our review here. 9.40pm
LIVE IN LONDON: A delightfully mixed bill at the 100 Club on Oxford Street (guess which number?) features improvised hip-hop from Abandoman, social comment from Dane Baptiste, silly observations from Ed Gamble, and soulful king of prop comedy, Spencer Jones.
LIVE IN NOTTINGHAMSHIRE: His sitcom, Hospital People, has just been commissioned for a full series on BBC One. But tonight you can see Tom Binns and his hapless, optimistic alter-ego Ivan Brackenbury at the Admiral Rodney in the town of Southwell.
Saturday October 15
LIVE IN LONDON: The Phoenix pub in Cavendish Square, close to Oxford Circus, is hosting an afternoon of Fringe Highlights this afternoon with some of the less well-known, but largely well-reviewed, shows of the festival, all being filmed by indie outfit Turtle Canyon. Brennan Reece’s Everglow kicks off at 1.30pm, then it’s Funmbi Omotayo, Tom Ward and the highlight of the day, Colin Hoult as deranged luvvie Anna Mann. Tickets are only £2 a show - cheaper than a coffee.
