Taking the Mike
EastEnders star Mike Reid has taken a pop at the new generation of comics.
The 65-year-old comedian, who is currently promoting a small stand-up tour said: ‘But I do have a lot of admiration for the alternative guys as they often have lightweight material with no belly laughs and play in little comedy clubs.
‘They go out with material which is not particularly funny most of the time and perform to small audiences. You need some guts to be doing that.’
And in the interview with the Liverpool Daily Post, Reid also admitted to stealing material.
‘The only person I know who wrote his own material and put it together was Bob Monkhouse,’ he said.
‘The trouble with doing that clever stuff about things that happened yesterday or today is that it can take audiences two or three seconds to tumble to it. That may not seem a long time but it is on stage when there is nothing coming back to you. And you can't always work it into the act.’
