Ncuti Gatwa triumphs at Broadcasting Press Guild Awards

Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa has won the Breakthrough award at the Broadcasting Press Guild Awards.

The actor plays Eric Effiong, a gay character from a religious Ghanaian family, in the Netflix comedy-drama.

Journalists who vote for the award named Fleabag best comedy category, with three times as many votes as the runner-up.

The other nominees were Brassic, Derry Girls, Gavin & Stacey and Mum. Members had previously been urged not to vote for Gavin & Stacey because of the row over its inclusion of The Pogues and Kirsty McColl song Fairytale Of New York, which some deemed homophobic.

And The Graham Norton Show was named best TV entertainment show, ahead of Michael McIntyre's Big Show, Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing, RuPaul's Drag Race UK and Taskmaster.

The awards were announced at a ceremony at Banking Hall in the City of London this lunchtime.
