Another garland for Adam Kay's memoirs
Adam Kay’s This Is Going To Hurt has been nominated for another award.
The medic-turned-comedian’s memoirs of his time as a junior NHS doctor has been shortlisted to the Independent Bookshop Week Book Award.
Also in the running for the accolade is Robert Webb’s autobiographical book about masculinity, How Not To Be A Boy.
The paperback edition of This Is Going to Hurt has topped the Sunday Times bestseller list for the past three weeks, and yesterday How Not To Be A Boy entered the top 10, too
Also shortlisted for the adult category of the award are Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman, The Secret Life of Cows by Rosamund Young, Life in the Garden by Penelope Lively, A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles, I Am I Am I Am by Maggie O'Farrell, Birdcage Walk by Helen Dunmore, Elmet by Fiona Mozley and Midwinter Break by Bernard MacLavert.
The winner will be chosen by independent retailers and announced on June 15.
Booksellers Association Nic Bottomley said: ‘This award is unique, in that its shortlist is generated from the opinions of the nation’s independent booksellers – the daily curators of an immense breadth of fiction and non-fiction titles.
‘When a customer walks into a bookshop and asks for a recommendation, they never know what might fall into their hands; it could be a memoir of multiple close scraps with death, a novel set in 18th century Bristol or anything else in between.
‘For myself and the rest of the panel, judging the variety of titles on offer is going to be a challenge, but an absolute joy to be a part of.’
