Call me Dr Reg...
Reginald D Hunter has been made an honorary doctor by the University of Lincoln.
Collecting his degree yesterday, he said: ‘I am profoundly stunned and honoured to receive this honorary doctorate, it feels like being King for a day.’
He formerly dropped out of college in the States to come to England, where he started comedy, to the dismay of his mother who was keen that her children be well educated.
‘In a way this enables me to look up to the heavens and say, "You can get off my back now", he said as he was honoured for his contribution to the arts.
The comedian also told students at the graduation ceremony: ‘I am grateful for my time in Britain. I’ve learned a lot here.
‘The greatest gift Britain has given me – and I don’t think I’d have ever learned this if I stayed in the United States – Britain taught me how to genuinely laugh at myself. From time to time, when it’s appropriate, to see the absurdity in the ridiculousness of me.
All of us fine people here who regard ourselves as highly educated and validated in some way. Just know that it’s good to remember sometimes that the reality of you is absolutely ridiculous.’
When asked what advice he would give young people he said: ‘Conformity is easy but what will stand out for you is what makes you different – find the source of that.’
