Montreal honours Trevor Noah
Trevor Noah, Jim Carrey and Scotland’s Craig Ferguson are to be honoured by Montreal’s Just For Laughs festival later this month.
Daily Show host Noah is to be named comedy person of the year as he performs two stand-up shows at the event.
Carrey wins the ‘Generation Award’, which last year went to Judd Apatow, while Ferguson will receive the ‘alumni tribute’.
Glasgow-born Ferguson, who started his career using the alter ego Bing Hitler, got his North American break at Just For Laughs in 1987. Thirty years on, he will be taping his first Netflix special at this year’s festival.
Mike Birbiglia, who will perform his latest show , The New One in Montreal, is to be named ‘stand-up comedian of the year’, while Ali Wong is to be named breakout comedy star of the year.
Kenya Barris, showrunner on Black-ish, will be named comedy writer of the year.
The awards will be handed out on July 28.
The previous day, the up-and-coming comedians named as Variety’s 10 Comics to Watch for 2017 will be honoured.
They are: Brian Jordan Alvarez, Rhea Butcher, Vir Das, Desus Nice and Kid Mero, John Early, Tiffany Haddish, Hasan Minhaj, Esther Povitsky, Jesus Trejo and Liza Treyger
