Ghosts gets an Australian remake

Local version to launch next year following US and German spinoffs

Ghosts is getting an Australian remake.

The eight-part series will launch on Paramount+ and Network 10 next year.

It follows the success of the US remake of the BBC comedy hit, which has run for 50 episode on CBS and with a fourth season starting next month.

Casting on the remake has not yet been announced, but the central characters will be renamed Kate and Sean, who escape the nightmare of the inner-city rental market when then inherit a huge, but haunted, mansion in the country called Ramshead Manor.

Daniel Monaghan of Paramount Australia said: ‘Ghosts has been a smash hit in the UK and US. and has also attracted a very loyal fanbase here in Australia. With a stellar cast yet to be announced, we can’t wait to bring to life our very own series with an Aussie twist.’

Kylie Washington, creative director of BBC Studios Productions Australia added: ‘Ghosts is one of those brilliant comedies which lends itself perfectly to localisation around the world, and we have our own, unique, Australian characters that reflect our very own history and culture.

‘Our eclectic group of ghosts provides endless entertainment in this share-house comedy series that we hope Australian viewers will fall in love with.’

A German version of Ghosts is also in the pipeline with Scout leader Pat replaced by teacher Svenni and Tory MP Julian turned into insurance salesman Joachim, Uunderstandably – there is no equivalent of the Second World War Captain and instead, there is a new character, the Roman legionnaire Claudius.

The news comes ahead of the launch Australian remake of The Office – with Felicity Ward as the first female boss in any iteration of the show – on Amazon’s Prime Video on October 18.

The original Ghosts is available on the ABC iview streaming service in Australia.
