US Ghosts makes a BIG departure from the UK original

Surprise move for season 4

The American version of Ghosts is to make a major change from the British original.

So don’t read on if you’re worried about spoilers.

In the fourth season Jay – the owner of the mansion based on Kiell Smith-Bynoe’s Mike – will finally get to see the spirits that haunt it.

It was a key plot point of the BBC series that he could not see the figures from history that his wife (Charlotte Ritchie) became aware of after suffering a head injury.

But at a Comic-Con panel in San Diego today, Utkarsh Ambudkar, who plays Jay, confirmed the change from the upcoming series 4.

In a comment reported by Deadline, he said: ’Guys, I get to talk to people at work!’

After originally aping the British series, the US version – which airs on CBS - has found its own storylines. In the UK, the comedy bowed out last Christmas after 34 episodes – while the Americans have already made 50 shows,

At the panel – which also featured showrunners Joe Port and Joe Wiseman and actors  Román Zaragoza, Rebecca Wisocky and Richie Moriarty – fans also learned of the introduction of a new ghost.

Patience is the ‘feral’ spirit  of a Puritan woman who was judgemental even by the standards of the rest of her community in the late 1600s.She was introduced in the season three finale when she kidnapped Revolutionary soldier  Isaac.

Mary Holland, who previously played Shawnee Tanz in five epispdes of Veep, will take the role with Port saying: ‘She’s funny, she’s quirky, she’s off, she’s just perfect for Patience.’

Dean Norris –  Hank Schrader from Breaking Bad – will also guest star  as Frank, the father of Rose McIver’s character Samantha.

Meanwhile, Kamala Harris surprised Simpsons fans at Comic-Con by appearing via video in a session about the animated show, where she was introduced as a ‘super fan’. She recited a quote from the 1996 Treehouse of Horror VII parodying meaningless political speeches: ‘We must move forward, not backward; upward, not forward; and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom.’

Ghosts returns to CBS in the States on on October 17. Previous episodes are available on BBC iPlayer in the UK.

The creators of the British series –  Mathew Baynton, Jim Howick, Simon Farnaby, Laurence Rickard, Ben Willbond and Martha Howe-Douglas – are executive producers on the US version.
