To cover the US presidential election

Jon Stewart is making a surprise return to The Daily Show after nine years away.

The comedian will host Comedy Central’s topical satire for one night a week during the US presidential election campaign.

Channel executive Chris McCarthy said: ’Jon Stewart is the voice of our generation, and we are honoured to have him return… to help us all make sense of the insanity and division roiling the country as we enter the election season.

‘In our age of staggering hypocrisy and performative politics, Jon is the perfect person to puncture the empty rhetoric and provide much-needed clarity with his brilliant wit.’

Stewart hosted the late-night show for 16 years from 1999, taking over from original host Craig Kilborn. He was replaced by Trevor Noah, who stepped down in 2022, to be replaced by a series of guest presenters.

Stewart will host on Monday nights from February 12 until November's election, with a rotating line-up of correspondents – including Desi Lydic, Michael Kosta and Ronny Chieng – fronting other shows’

Mondays are generally the most-watched episodes of The Daily Show  as viewers catch up on the weekend’s news

The Daily Show streams on Apple TV+ and Now TV in the UK
