Tributes as Royle Family's Peter Martin dies at 82

Actor played neighbour Joe Carroll

Ricky Tomlinson has paid tribute to his Royle Family co-star Peter Martin following his death at the age of 82.

Martin played Joe Carroll - the neighbour of Tomlinson’s Jim Royle – in  11 episodes of the  BBC sitcom.

Comedian John Martin posted on Twitter: ‘Ricky Tomlinson (who doesn’t do social media) has asked me to pay tribute to Peter Martin who sadly has passed away Ricky said he was an absolute joy to work with and a brilliant actor. He will be sadly missed by Ricky. R.I.P.’

The actor was also known for his stint on Emmerdale, in which he played Len Reynolds  from 2001 to 2007, and for a series of adverts for building supply company Jewson.

His other comedy credits include  First Of The Summer Wine, Brassed Off, Chucklevision, and playing Captain Mainwaring in a stage production of Dad's Army.

The Gold TV channel, which is airing all three series of The Royle Family back-to-back over the Coronation weekend, tweeted: 'All of us at Gold are saddened by the passing of Peter Martin who lit up the screen as Joe Carroll in #TheRoyleFamily. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.'
