Derry Girls wins best comedy at the Broadcast Awards
Derry Girls has been named best comedy at this year’s Broadcast Awards.
The final series of Lisa McGee’s Channel 4 comedy was praised for ‘blending a particularly troubled period of time with laugh-out-loud comedy’ by judges at the industry accolades.
Cited as being ‘comedy genius on every level’, the show as praised for its ‘loveable, funny characters who you grow to love as friends’ and consistently strong performances from the entire cast
Fellow nominees in the comedy category were:
- Am I Being Unreasonable? - ‘a funny panic attack across six half-hours that keeps you laughing and guessing until the last frame’
- Big Boys - ‘executed with originality and humour, without ever downplaying the emotions of its main characters’
- Cheaters - ‘playing with format on its modest budget, the 10-minute episodes leave audiences to make up their own minds on who, if anyone, is in the wrong
- Stath Lets Flats – praised for its ‘commitment to being a true comedy in a world of dark comedies and dramedies’
- Wedding Season - Disney+’s first UK production which writer Oliver Lyttelton wanted to nbe ‘the least boring television show ever made’.
Meanwhile, the adaptation of Adam Kay’s bestselling junior doctor memoir This Is Going To Hurt was named best drama.
Judges said: ‘The series seamlessly combines sharp wit, the harrowing realism of the maternity ward and operating theatre, perfectly formed characters, award-worthy acting and, most importantly, represents the challenges the NHS faces and the human impact that has.’
And Chris Curtis, editor-in-chief of trade website Broadcast, which handed out the awards, said it ‘articulated the immense pressure facing the NHS as well as any documentary could’.
Lee Mack fronted gameshow The 1% Club was named best entertainment as well as winning an award for international sales. Judges said it was ‘a genuine hit in the genre’ and praised the comedian as ‘the perfect host’ who delivered a ‘standout performance’.
The Lateish Show With Mo Gilligan was highly commended in the category, winning praise for its ‘refreshing and extremely comic take’ on the late-night format.
Also nominated in this category were Big Zuu’s Big Eats, Gogglebox, Life & Rhymes and Strictly Come Dancing.
