George Carlin biopic in the works
George Carlin is set to be the subject of a new biographical movie.
Jerry Hamza – the comic’s manager and friend, and the executor of his estate – will be one of the producers
He said: ‘I’m very excited to be involved with a film based on George’s life. It was wasn’t until after George died, I realised he was a hero.
‘As a performer, George would never "sell out" and never comprise his beliefs – I learned so much from him. I think the public will be very happy to learn about George’s life. He was truly the top of the ladder in his field.’
Other producers are Carlin’s former agent Bruce Kaufman and Joe Earley of The Jackal Group, the production company which brought the rights to the comedian’s life story.
In a joint statement, they said: ‘We are honoured to tell the story of one of the most important and influential comedians of all time, and to do so alongside those who knew him best.
‘In addition to shaping comedy and culture for decades, and entertaining generations of audiences, Carlin’s battle to protect free speech continues to impact our daily lives and is as relevant as ever.’
It is not yet known whether the film will be destined for cinemas, a streaming service or traditional TV broadcast.
Stan Chervin, who penned the Brad Pitt movie Moneyball is attached to write to script.
Carlin – who appeared on The Tonight Show more than 130 times, made 14 HBO stand-ups specials and 23 albums, and hosted the first Saturday Night Live – died on June 22, 2008 aged 71.
