How The Onion helped America laugh again
A new short film has been released showing how satirical news outlet The Onion reacted to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
Released to mark the 30th anniversary of The Onion, the 17-minute film has been complied from material recorded for a forthcoming documentary entitled Too Soon: The Comedy of 9/11.
It features interviews with original writer/editors Todd Hanson, Carol Kolb, and Robert Siegel about how the magazine and website reacted to the news, with headlines such as America Vows to Defeat Whoever It Is We’re at War With, Hijackers Surprised To Find Selves In Hell, and God Angrily Clarifies ‘Don’t Kill’ Rule.
Too Soon producer Julie Seabaugh, a longstanding comedy journalist, said: ‘The Onion has inspired generations of comedians and comedy fans. Its influence was never more immediate than when it gave the country collective permission to laugh again in the aftermath of 9/11.’
Due to be released in 2021, Too Soon follows the sudden halt and gradual evolution of the US comedy industry in the 20 years following the most earth-shattering event in the nation’s history. The Onion, alongside the humour of the late-night talk show hosts, is credit with helping America regain a sense of normalcy in the face of tragedy.
The film is directed by Nick Scown, whose previous subjects have ranged from Oprah to the UFC. Producers are currently seeking donors to help complete the project, via TooSoonDoc.com.
