Peter Kay gives the BBC a lift

Car Share wins a massive 6.4m viewers

The return of Peter Kay’s Car Share attracted a massive 6.4million viewers to BBC One last night.

That was 700,000 more than the opening episode of the first series achieved in 2015, and more than 50 per cent higher than the slot average.

All three subsequent episodes in the news series, which also stars Sian Gibson, were put on iPlayer immediately after the first aired.

The strong audience helped get the tribute to Victoria Wood, which immediately followed Car Share, off to a good start.

Presented by Julie Walters, the first episode of the clip series was seen by 4.8million viewers, again better than the slot average.

The numbers – as provided by overnights.tv – contributed to a dire evening for ITV, which aired the Olivier awards to an average of just 1million viewers, meaning it was trounced by BBC2 and Channel 4.
