Miranda Hart 'set to appear in Annie'

Her West End musical debut

Miranda Hart is set to make her West End debut in the musical Annie.

The comedian is reportedly due to take the role of Miss Hannigan, the drunk, child-hating villain who runs the orphanage where Annie is languishing, from May.

Hart has long professed her love for the musical, having used its best-known song Tomorrow in an episode of Miranda and choosing Easy Street – Miss Hannigan’s main number – when she appeared on Desert Island Discs.

Theatre insider Baz Bamigboye reports in today’s Daily Mail that Hart is in ‘the final stages of contract negotiations’ for the role – although no one would officially comment.

The production is a revamped version of a production that toured the UK in 2015 and 2016, and will be staged at London’s Piccadilly Theatre for a limited season. Hart is said to be playing only part of the run because of previous commitments.

Craig Revel Horwood played Hannigan for some of the previous tour, while Carol Burnett immortalised the character in in the 1982 film version.

Here’s a teaser of the show when it went on tour last year:
