Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton scoop comedy writing Bafta
Other awards for Taskmaster, Lucia Keskin and Richard Gadd
Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton has won this year’s Bafta for comedy writing for the final series of Inside No 9.
The pair collected their accolades at the academy’s Craft Awards – which is separate from the televised ceremony for on-screen talent – in London last night.
The duo were presented with the award by Rosie Cavaliero and Sian Gibson, who have both appeared in the BBC Two comic anthology series.
In their acceptance speech, Pemberton said: ‘Ironically, we didn’t write anything to say in the event of us winning as we didn’t think we would.’
Shearsmith added: ‘To still be doing things and being recognised ten years later for Inside No. 9 is amazing.’
The pair previously won the award in 2018.
The other nominees in the category were Brett Goldstein for Shrinking, Phil Dunning for Smoggie Queens and Nida Manzoor for We Are Lady Parts.
The offscreen talent behind Taskmaster won the Bafta for the best entertainment craft team, presented by comic Harriet Kemsley.
Series director Andy Devonshire said it was a ‘privilege and honour’ to ‘make something we really love to do’.
And Lucia Keskin was announced as the winner of the emerging talent category for fiction for writing Things You Should Have Done. Her producer Ash Atalla picked up the prize on her behalf, as she was busy filming the next series.
And Richard Gadd picked up the drama writing prize for Baby Reindeer and thanked ‘all the amazing people who have got me through the most difficult times’.
He also thanked his agents, saying: ‘I’m not the easiest of clients. That’s not because I’m difficult, it’s because every two years they find me in a bush with my underpants on my head.’
Baby Reindeer’s director Weronika Tofilska also won a Bafta for her work on the show.
The main Bafta TV Awards will take place on Sunday May 11.
