Netflix to make its first Indian stand-up special
Vir Das is to record the first Netflix stand-up special to be shot in India.
The comic, who appeared at last month’s Edinburgh Fringe, will film his Really Special stand-up show in his home town of Delhi this autumn.
It will then be made available in the 100-plus countries where the on demand service is available.
Das said: ‘I'm excited to announce that this October, after years of watching the comedians I love on Netflix, I’m going to shoot India's first ever Netflix Original comedy special.
‘It's a gigantic opportunity. Netflix produces comedy specials with the biggest comedians out there. I look forward to being an authentic, Indian voice on that world circuit.’
Netflix launched in India at the start of the year, but has been struggling to make an impact. Critics say it lacks the depth of content compared to its inventory in the US, while the company also faces fierce competition in a crowded market and a broadband infrastructure that can struggle with streaming video.
This summer, the company announced its first local Indian commission, an adaptation of the novel Sacred Games, by bestselling author Vikram Chandra.
Netflix does not release country-by-country breakdown of its subscriber numbers.
