Filming starts on Citizen Khan
Filming has started on series five of Citizen Khan in Birmingham.
Scenes have been shot it the character's home area of Sparkhill, inside Edgbaston Cricket Ground and at the historic Jewellery Quarter where the crew recreated a scene from the Birmingham-set gangster thriller Peaky Blinders as Mr Khan clashes with a local family.
Adil Ray returns to the title role in the new sereis alongside Shobu Kapoor, who plays Mrs Khan; Abdullah Afzal, who plays son-in-law Amjad with Krupa Pattani and Bhavna Limbachia, who play daughters Shazia and Alia.
The fifth series of the show – now one of the BBC's longest-running comedies – also introduces Shazia's new baby daughter Nadiya, named after the Bake Off champion.
Ray said: 'It felt great to be filming the scenes in Birmingham. To meet so many young children and families reminded me why we do this job! It feels like such an important time to be filming a show like ours.'
Joe Godwin, director of BBC Midlands said: 'For the past four years, Citizen Khan has brought life in Birmingham to BBC One prime time, so it's really great that all the location filming is taking place here in the West Midlands.'
Although outside shots are filmed in Birmingham, inside scenes will be filmed in front of a studio audience at MediaCityUK, Salford, before Citizen Khan returns to BBC One later this year.
