Groundhog Day heads to New York

Broadway transfer for Tim Minchin musical

Tim Minchin’s Groundhog Day musical is heading to New York.

The show’s Broadway transfer had been thrown into doubt when its original American co-producer Scott Rudin pulled out of the project, delaying its planned January opening

Now it has been announced that the show will open at August Wilson Theatre on Monday, April 17, with previews starting sometime in March.

Minchin joined forces with Danny Rubin, writer of the 1993 film starring Bill Murray, to create the stage musical, which has been directed by Matthew Warchus.

Warchus, who also worked with Minchin on the Matilda musical, is now artistic director of London’s Old Vic Theatre, where Groundhog Day is currently playing to favourable reviews.

It had been reported that the $16.5million price tag of the production had spooked Rudin, but the New York Post quoted Warchus saying: ‘We had an elegant separation based on nothing other than having different expectations and different ways of tackling things.’

Broadway casting will be announced at a later date and tickets will go on sale from October 12.

It will be taking the place of Jersey Boys at the August Wilson Theatre.
