Brendon Burns roasts the comedy industry
Here is the full audio recording Brendon Burns's keynote speech from the Chortle conference.
We previously reported how he told the audience that the comedy circuit is failing because it attempts to pander to self-absorbed audiences with no real interest in the art form.
Burns also said the scene had become too narrow, especially with regards to race, hampered by misplaced political correctness, and ruined by the cookie-cutter approach of big agencies.
But speaking about the address on his podcast, Burns stressed that he said that while he 'kinda' felt that way, the speech was written for laughs, not for campaigning, and that he had no desire to 'put my head above the parapet and become the champion of the industry'.
He said: 'I was just trying to be funny; I was just roasting my industry. I wasn't really giving it the big "I know how this industry should be run", I was just letting my bitter crazy moron speak.'
And he added: 'Know I don't have a genuine grudge to bear about Russell Howard and Stewart Lee' – both of whom he roasted in his speech.
The address itself starts at 14 mins 50 sec into this podcast episode, with an introduction from fellow comic John Hastings.
