Catastrophe strikes again
Channel 4 has commissioned a second series of Catastrophe, just two weeks into its initial run.
Rob Delaney and Sharon Horgan, who wrote and co-star in the comedy about a couple thrown into an accelerated relationship by an unexpected pregnancy, are expected to return next year.
The show launched two weeks ago with 800,000 viewers, according to overnight figures, down on Channel 4’s average of 1.2million audience for the 10pm Monday slot.
However the show has been lauded by critics (see our review of episode one here) and picked up another 400,000 viewers with a Friday-night repeat.
It’s not yet known which of the supporting cast – including Carrie Fisher as Rob's mum Mia and Ashley Jensen as Sharon's self-centred friend Fran – will return.
Jay Hunt, Channel 4's chief creative officer, said: ‘Catastrophe is a real comedy gem. Sharon and Rob have done a magnificent job, and we’re already looking forward to series 2.’
And Jon Thoday, joint managing director of programme-makers Avalon, added: 'It’s a real pleasure to be working with such a talented team on such a great show and I’m delighted that we’ll be making more episodes with Channel 4.'
