They must surely have know what to expect when they booked Jimmy Carr as host. But last night’s Q Awards have been overshadowed by a storm over a dark joke he cracked about Oscar Pistorius.

The comic complained about the queues for the toilets at the event – quipping: ‘So frustrating. All I’m saying is I can see it from Oscar Pistorius’ point of view.’

Reports say the line caused the 200-strong audience to bristle, but he continued undaunted: ‘That’s not the controversial bit. Here it comes… I blame her. If she hadn’t been in that disabled toilet none of this would have happened.’

The comment has been widely reported today -and greeted with a mix of outrage and support on Twitter, but Carr told The Mirror after the gig: ‘I think it went all right.’

Pistorius was this week sentenced to five years for the culpable homicide of Reeva Steenkamp, whom he shot dead in the toilet of his South African home.
