US has a second bite at Friday Night Dinner
America is having a second attempt at making its own version of Friday Night Dinner.
Creator Robert Popper is adapting his own scripts after the CBS network agreed a 'put pilot' deal, which means a trial episode is most likely to be shot.
Popper told Chortle: 'I'm really excited about writing the new pilot, and hope I can make something that Americans laugh at. The show will still be basically the same, only with spellcheck set to 'mom'. Oh, and it's all now set underwater.'
Previously NBC tried to adapt the Channel 4 series for its 2011-12 season with Greg Daniels, who successfully oversaw the import of The Office to the US – but that version was not picked up for a series.
Popper will be an executive producer on the new CBS version, alongside others including Kenton Allen and Matthew Justice from British production company Big Talk, which made the original.
Hollywood website Deadline reports that 'the intention is to keep the single-camera nature of the series... in the vein of ABC’s Modern Family.'
The original, which has just finished its third season, has aired on BBC America.
