George Zimmerman's parents sue Roseanne Barr
Roseanne Barr is being sued by the parents of George Zimmerman after she tweeted their home address to her 110,000 followers.
The comedian distributed the information in March 2012 to let people ‘know that no one can hide any more’ after Zimmerman fatally shot unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin.
Falsely believing Zimmerman still lived with his parents, she later tweeted: ‘If Zimmerman isn’t arrested I’ll rt his address again... maybe go 2 his house myself.’
In court papers obtained by The Smoking Gun website, Robert and Gladys Zimmerman allege that the 61-year-old performer sought to ‘cause a lynch mob to descend’ on their Florida home. They claim it was ‘an open and obvious call for vigilante justice’.
Barr, who subsequently deleted the contentious tweets also stated online: ‘Vigilante-ism is what killed Trayvon. I don’t support that.’
In their lawsuit seeking more than $15,000 in damages, the Zimmermans say they were forced to flee their home and into hiding because of the tweet, which sought to cause ‘severe emotional distress…and possible great physical harm, if not death.’
The court papers, The Smoking Gun noted, does not mention Martin’s name, instead referring to ‘an incident on February 26, 2012 which gained national attention and resulted in a highly publicised trial.’
Zimmerman, who is white, was later acquitted of murdering the black teenager using Florida’s controversial ‘stand your ground’ defence.
