Comedy tour for John Bird (not that one)

Big Issue founder launches stand-up show

Big Issue founder John Bird is to embark on a one-man stand-up tour.

The World According to John Bird is billed as ‘a personal tale that is both achingly funny and powerfully inspiring’ as it describes how he went from poverty and prison to launch the street newspaper to aid the homeless in 1991.

‘I am the comedian who started The Big Issue, not to be confused with the comedian from Bird and Bremner,’ he said.

And talking about the project last year. Bird said modestly: ‘I am actually very funny.

Describing him as a ‘raconteur, painter, poet and social revolutionary,’ the Big Issue website is keen to emphasise that the show is a comedy, describing it as a stand-up tour and saying that Bird will be ‘ will be donning his comedy hat’ for the show.

The seven-date tour, which kicks off in East London in February, is being promoted by Lakin McCarthy, the company co-run by Linda Smith’s widower Warren Lakin who are also touring Lucy Porter, Robin Ince and Arthur Smith. Click here for dates.
