Medics could become channel's first studio audience show

Comedy Central is to pilot a 'high-paced and raucous' student sitcom.

Medics has been created by relatively new TV writer Mark Grimmer, whose previous credits include helping script The Midnight Beast's E4 series.

Casting has not yet been announced, but the show is about a group of hapless medical students living and training together, which might invite comparisons with Channel 4's student comedy Fresh Meat.

The characters are described as: 'the lovable Denham (inept, anxious), the larger-than-life Jugs (rugby player, party animal), the super-cool Caroline (smart, witty), the rather eccentric Millie (naive, arguably insane) and the terrifying Dangerous Dave (has possibly killed a man)'.

Grimmer has been developing the script since 2011, and the show is being made by production company Clerkenwell Films, whose credits include Misfits and drama Rebus.

The pilot will be shot in front of a live audience next month – see our free tickets page to be in the audience – and if commissioned the show would be Comedy Central's first home-grown studio sitcom.

The broadcaster has announced a strategy to develop more British programmes with formats that might have international appeal.
