It's the Wed-inburgh Fringe
WTF: Weekly Trivia File
• ‘Comedy isn't tragedy plus time, it's rage plus structure,’ Josh Whedon.• Comedian Bec Hill got engaged on stage after her boyfriend Gavin Innes proposed during her show at the Edinburgh Fringe. He popped the question as the London-based Australian comic engaged in some banter with the audience, asking them what they would do if they were mugged. Innes put his hand up from the back of the room and said: ‘I’d propose.’ He then came on stage an asked to marry her. Hill said: ‘ I nodded and cried. I had 10 minutes left to do so I performed 10 minutes with tears streaming down my face.’ In the words of one audience member: ‘Best. Heckle. Ever.’
• Larry David played a round of golf with Barack Obama on Saturday, as the President enjoyed a holiday at Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.
• Jim Davidson has a weight off his mind this week. But even before it was decided there was insufficient evidence to take him to court on allegations of historic sexual abuse, the comedian found time to fire off a rant against Adrian Edmondson (or ‘Edmendson’ as he misspells it). Apparently the Young Ones star criticised Davidson in an interview, prompting the old-school stand-up to take to his blog and call Edmondson ‘the unfunniest man in the world’. And his in usual not-at-all sexist way added: ‘I’ve never liked that arrogant self satisfied lefty and I am so glad I get up his snooty nose. Imagine being a comedian and have a wife that is more talented, famous and funny? Poor bastard.’ He added: ‘Grow up you silly liitle [sic] boy. Look forward to seeing you on Celebraty [sic] chef things again.’ Both Edmondson and Davidson have appeared on Hell’s Kitchen – but not the same series.
• Simon Pegg was goosed by Dave Grohl at the US premiere of The World’s End this week.
• Comic Paolo Ferrari is performing his Camden Fringe show in the street after his venue, Etrusco Bar, closed down. The comic will now perform his ‘random, unstructured and improvised comedy and poetry show’ outside the venue over the weekend. The highlight is said to be him stuffing spaghetti in his mouth.
• Ardal O’Hanlon is getting in early with his bid to be the next Dr Who after Peter Capaldi. ‘I think I would have been a very suitable Doctor,’ he said. ‘I think I have the correct amount of nerdiness, and curiosity to play the role.’
