1Xtra launches its first comedy season

Urban stand-up, sketches and narrative

Radio 1Xtra is to launch its first ever comedy season this month – including stand-up, a radio comedy-drama, and sketch and character comedy.

The move follows the reintroduction of comedy to its mainstream sister station, including a regular comedy-themed show from former Chortle Student Comedy Award winner Tom Deacon.

Kicking off the comedy season on the urban music station is Radio 1Xtra’s Comedy Club – an hour-long show going out at 9pm on Monday to Thursday next week.

The urban line-up includes Babatunde, Jamie Howard, Kane Brown, Miss London, Travis Jay, Kae Kurd; Mo The Comedian (pictured) and Radio 1Xtra’s drive-time DJ Charlie Sloth.

That will be followed by Knockback, the station’s first scripted comedy drama, which has been written by and stars Daniel Kaluuya and Jason Lewis. About the ‘loveable failures’ of two young guys trying to make it in life , the show will make its debut as six ten-minute episodes on the 1Xtra website before the entire hour-long show airs on April 14 at 9pm.

The second week of the comedy season us dubbed ‘Comedy Takeover’ as character comedians are given slots on the station’s daytime schedule.

They include Bricka Bricka, Kayvan Novak, Jocelyn J, Fire In The Spoof, Mo The Comedian, Lee Nelson, Squeezy and Klayze, A Dot Comedian, Farley and Reid, Terry Mynott, Kurupt FM, KG and Marston, Man Dem On The Wall, and Jazzie as well as rapper Lethal B and stand-up Paul Chowdhry.

Finally, drivetime DJ Charlie Sloth will be dedicating his slot on April 25 to a sketch-based comedy show all about himself as the self-proclaimed ‘best looking fat guy in the universe’.

Charlie Sloth’s Rinse Out will feature N-Dubz singer Tulisa performing twisted versions of her songs, a mockumentary all about a day in Charlie’s life, a Toilet Humour strand with DJ Trevor Nelson, as well as pranks and musical spoofs.
