Huge audience for BBC Three

Gavin and Stacey has proved a ratings hit for BBC Three, attracting an impressive 1.7 million viewers for the start of its second series on Sunday night.

The first episode attracted 7.3 per cent of the total possible audience between 9pm and 9.30pm.

It marks BBC Three's second highest ratings for a comedy, behind Little Britain’s 1.9 million viewers in October 2004.

A second episode of Gavin And Stacey, which aired immediately after the first, attracted 1.6 million viewers.

The two much-publicised episodes were the fifth- and sixth-best rated shows on BBC Three since it launched five years ago.
