Hmmm controversy...
The Simpsons has triumphed in the Emmy awards after voters shied away from honouring a South Park episode lampooning Scientology and Tom Cruise.
It is the ninth year that The Simpsons was named best animated show in the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which usually attract little media attention.
But this year the South Park team submitted their controversial Trapped In The Closet episode, mocking soul singer and Scientologist Isaac Hayes’s decision to quit playing Chef in the show.
A repeat was controversially pulled from the schedule amid allegations, strongly denied, that Cruise had used his clout against Comedy Central.
Accepting his award, Simpsons executive producer Al Jean said, ‘This is what happens when you don't mock Scientology
At last night’s ceremony, former Frasier star Kelsey Grammer also took an Emmy for playing Sideshow Bob in the Simpsons.
The more mainstream Primetime Emmy Awards will be handed out next Sunday.
