Kay signs book deal
Peter Kay has signed a lucrative deal to write his autobiography, at the age of 32.
The book, to be published later this summer, will chart his rise from a struggling stand-up to one of Britain’s highest-earning comedians in under a decade.
Random House has snapped up the rights to his memoirs, which they say are very funny.
Hannah Black, commissioning editor of Random House imprint Century, said: ‘Publishing Peter Kay's autobiography is a dream come true.
‘Not only have Century acquired a gifted writer with a keen sense of the absurdities and idiosyncrasies of all family life, but also one of Britain's greatest comedians. ‘
We've loved what we read so far. We started to laugh after the first line and carried on laughing until the end."
Kay won the So You Think You’re Funny? new act competition in 1997 and was nominated for the Perrier the following year. By 2001, he had made Phoenix Nights, but it was the John Smith’s beer adverts that catapulted him to the big time, allowing him to break records for his Mum Wants A Bungalow tour and subsequent DVDs – although fans criticised him for releasing two different discs from the same tour, containing much of the same material
Mark Booth, publishing director of Century said: 'We are absolutely thrilled to be publishing Peter Kay and we are confident that the book will be a huge critical and commercial success.'
The publisher also released a quote from Kay saying: 'I'm busy writing... do you want this book finished or not?'
