Rude boy

BBC apologies for Ali G swearing

Radio One has apologised after Ali G swore on yesterday's Sara Cox breakfast show.

He repeatedly used words such as poonani that had already been censored from his new single, and said that much worse swearing had previously been broadcast, including the word 'motherfucker'.

Asked about Pop Idol winner Will Young, he asked: "Is that the spasticated one or the batty boy?"

And he also said he brought back from the Caribbean "about as much weed as I could squeeze up my bum", adding "I's shat it out."

His language was so strong that even fellow guest Shaggy said: "I hope to God my mum isn't listening."

A Radio 1 spokesman said: "We are very sorry for any offence caused to our listeners. It is not something we take lightly."

The station specifically appeals to children, particularly during half-term, and separately counts the number of listeners under 15.

Ali G, the creation of Sacha Baron Cohen, did the live interview to promote his new record, Julie, recorded with Shaggy.

His spokesman said Ali G never apologises.
