Vir Das writes his memoirs

About being an outsider and how comedy saved him

Indian comedian Vir Das has written his memoirs, entitled The Outsider.

The globally touring stand-up – a regular visitor to the UK – said: ‘For some reason, I have seen more of the world, and been let into more worlds, than anyone I know. Laughter has truly saved my life. I hope to show you how funny and beautiful this world is.’

The title will be out in the UK on November 4, published by Simon and Schuster.

It takes its cue from the day Das found himself stranded on a pier in Cozumel, Mexico, watching his cruise ship sail away without him due to visa issues.

The Outsider coverThe publisher’s blurb says: ‘It became a metaphor for his life: he's always been, and will always be, an outsider. Standing on that beach, he took in the absurdity of it all - broke, hungover, dumped, jobless, trousers full of sand. He knew the best way to deal with the situation wasn't to retreat. It was to laugh.’

The comic’s life story is described as ‘one of cultural dissonance and identity exploration’ having grown up in both India and Nigeria, going to college in Illinois then touring the world as a comedian.

His fourth and most recent Netflix comedy special, Landing, earned him the 2023 International Emmy for best comedy, while his show at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe, The Fool, was warmly received, including a four-an-a-half-star Chortle review. He starred in Judd Apatow's Netflix film The Bubble and he is currently developing his own single-camera comedy in the US.

Simon and Schuster add: ‘The Outsider is more than just a memoir about Vir's rise to comedic fame; it's a powerful reflection on how being a misfit can shape one's identity into something truly unique. Vir's story speaks to anyone who has ever felt out of place, serving as a testament to the resilience and humour that can arise when you resist the urge  to fit in, and stay true to who you are.’

It is available to order now from Amazon, priced £22.42 in hardback.
