Matt Lucas

Matt Lucas

Date of birth: 05-03-1974
Born in London and educated at Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School, Matt Lucas lost his hair at the age of six, giving him a distinctive look from an early age.

He was a member of both the National Youth Music Theatre and the National Youth Theatre, where he met comedy partner David Walliams, and both went on to study drama at the University of Bristol.

He began his career in comedy on the stand-up circuit as character act Sir Bernard Chumley, an aging luvvie actor, which he took to the Edinburgh Festival and who later resurfaced in Little Britain

In 1992, Bob Mortimer spotted him on a comedy club stage and recruited him to appear in the second series of The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer. He then went on to be the giant baby George Dawes, who kept score on Reeves and Mortimer's cult quiz show Shooting Stars.

But he is best known for his partnership with David Walliams, which started in earnest with the 1999 UK Play series Rock Profile. They recorded their first of two series of Little Britain for Radio 4 in 2001, and it transferred onto BBC Three in 2003.

In 2002, he played Leigh Bowery in Boy George's musical Taboo in London, and in 2005, he took his first role in a TV drama, playing a Venetian duke in the BBC's Casanova.

Matt Lucas and David Walliams are back together

Little Britain duo launch an interview podcast

Matt Lucas and David Walliams have reunited to create a new podcast.

The Little Britain creators will next week launch Making A Scene, in which the interview fellow comedians and other famous friends ‘to turn their lives  into cinematic masterpieces’

‘Asking who would play them, what kind of movie would it be? A comedy, a musical, or a horror?,’ Walliams says  on a video released to promote the new show.

He introduces the trailer by saying:  ‘Well Matt, we’re back,’ prompting Lucas to reply ‘Hang on, I thought you were cancelled?’ and sparking a jokey debate over who had overstepped the line.

Lucas concludes: ‘I can’t be that cancelled, I was in Gladiator 2’.

‘In a very, very minor role,’ Walliams fired back. ‘Which I actually turned down.

Lucas played a the Colosseum's master of ceremonies in the Ridley Scott epic.

Both have faced criticism for using blackface and racial stereotyping in their shows, while Walliams was rapped for comments he made off-camera about contestants when he was a judge on Britain's Got Talent. He later received damages from the producers over the leak of tapes capturing the derogatory and sexually explicit remarks, which he said was in breach of data protection laws.

Stephen Merchant, Jack Whitehall, Rob Brydon, Richard E Grant and Alan Carr are among the guests featured in the teaser.

The pair split acrimoniously in 2011 but reunited in 2019 to create a one-off Radio 4 episode of Little Britain, entitled Little Brexit, which is said to have rekindled a desire to work together.  The pair have reportedly been in talks about creating a new project for Netflix.
